Historical materialism: for marx, the most important part of society is economy because how we distribute goods; our most basic need. When one economic system is overthrow and is replaced by a different economic system, problems arise. It"s only through language that we can communicate ideas and allows us to reflect on the past, to plan for the future, to coordinate our activities with each other, to communicate about things that aren"t in our physical presence. 3 major considerations in ethics: do not harm subjects, confidentiality/anomity, informal consent. 3 stages we go through in the development of the self : the imitation stage: first 3 or 4 years of life. We can see and recognize faces, look and watch what other people do and imitate them without understanding why: the play stage: begin to understand roles. Cultural relativity : the idea that every society will be judged and analyzed in its own context.
