Document Summary

Ferguson, miller agree with rousseau that private property creates inequality, but argue inequality is good. Malthus: social demographer, viewed inequality favorably, as means of controlling population, thought that equal distribution of resources would increase world population unsustainable levels and ultimately bring about mass starvation and conflict. Society moves forward toward more freedom and democracy: b/c he believed that over time society would have more and more free people, ex: slaves to technology, games, media (movies, books, shows ), clothes, makeup. In order to feel joy, people become dependent on those things. Everyone is created equal in the eyes of god. In a way it justifies inequality b/c some people might think that rich people are more blessed: there is no need for intervention b/c god is there to worry. Ferguson and miller believe this the way to solve the problem. Inequality is acceptable if: has the same opportunities for advancement.
