Document Summary
Jean baptist lemarck believed that all species on earth could be arranged on a linear scale with reference to their complexity- chain of being. Creation that received a negative response: third was his concervative scientific nature so he made sure he had sufficient evidence. It was finally published due to a letter he received from alfred russel. Wallace, who asked an opinion on evolution: elements of the theory of evolution, the origins of species. In chapter 1 darwin shows how individual differences within a species could be accentuated through deliberate breeding. In chapter 2 darwin noted the universality of individual differences within species found in nature: he believed that some variation was spontaneous and random (like mutation) but he also allowed the idea of inherited acquired characteristics. The 3rd and 4th chapters contain the core of the theory: natural selection.
