Consequentialism: consequences of one"s conduct are the ultimate basis for any judgment about the rightness or wrongness of that conduct. Utilitarianism: right conduct is based on maximizing utility or the greatest happiness principle. Act utilitarianism: consequences of actions will max happiness (poison innocent hitler) rule utilitarianism: consequences of everyone following a rule that will max happiness. Mill"s greatest happiness principle: actions are right in proportion as they tend to promote happiness. By happiness is intended pleasure, and the absence of pain. Mill"s concept of happiness vs. aristotle"s: pleasure (bodily pleasures such as drinking) mill on higher and lower pressures: mental vs bodily/ makes choices on which one based off low character. We are responsible for the actions that we don"t do. Precedent effect 3. doesn"t respect that fact that we are all different. Moral life is messy and involves a lot of values, not just consequences and happiness.
