Lab 4 and 5: precipitation hardening of aluminum alloys and heat treatment of steels . In this experiment, we examine methods of heat treating steel and aluminum. Precipitation hardening is used to strengthen the aluminum while different heat treatment methods are used to strengthen the steel. Natural and artificial aging are both examined in the treatment of the aluminum. Annealing, normalizing, quenching, tempering, and austempering are all examined in the treatment of the steel specimens. The hardenability of steel is examined through a jominy. The specimens are also subjected to rockwell hardness tests and charpy impact tests to compare the pre-heat treatment properties to the post-heat treatment properties. Using the experiment"s results in combination with the rockwell hardness scale, we developed an expression to calculate the activation energy. When the experiment was completed, the hardness values for the normal and artificially aged aluminum specimens were graphed with respect to time (figure 12).
