Intercollegiate contests: variety of sports, student initiated, violence, 1895- beginning of the ncaa. When college sports began, they were extracurricular activities. Faculty felt it did not meet the purpose of higher education. Most schools in d1, academics and athletics are completely separate. Rowing contest between harvard and yale 1852 was first collegiate competition. Railroad much popular form of transportationom: sponsored the contest, transported the people to the contest, marketing tactic. Baseball, boxing, wrestling, etc. competing as well. Teams were considered campus clubs not sponsored by the university. Football was more like soccer, and then rugby at first (25 people on field) Initial scoring was 1 point for a kick between the field goals. Ball can now be carried over the goal for 2 points, kicked for 5 points. Football spreads and addresses violence: rose bowl (1902, pick two teams from different sides of the country, president theodore roosevelt.
