Why: provided order in a time of ciaos after the fall of the empire. Created by the countryside, rural environment, rather than former city based gov. It is a combination of two other systems: Comes out of loyalty of a warrior to his chief. Chief has small group of men who provide loyalty and fight for chief, chief provided food and money and lute for men. But money was going away so vassals (warrior) were rewarded with manors. When i call you, you come with your armor and war horses ready to fight. Carolingian relies on his small group of men who are closest to him.
