Discovery of new civilizations: homer and schliemann, minoan civ, mycenaean civ. Archaic age 750-550 bc: characteristics, poets and pre-socrates. Iliad (poem about the trojan war) and the odyssey. Schliemann really smart and is forced to work due to poverty and teaches himself. Goes to cali (1850 gold rush) to sell miners supplies and makes a fortune. Goes to greece in order to locate the city of troy. Discovers the city and its enormous walls. Finds a ton of gold after digging. Now decides to find mycenae finds it and also has huge walls. Finds 19 graves and have grave goods (weapons) Goes to crete and digs at knossos and finds a large palace. It is believed to be a civ. of traders and parts of the palace were decorated with fancy colors and such. They had a ton of bull imagery. Never finds gold, but instead finds writings (clay tablets)
