Document Summary

Objectives: what are products of eruption, what do volcanoes look like, hazards that volcanoes present. What are products of eruption: 3 different eruption products, lava flows, basaltic lava flow. Low viscosity means it travels far and fast from volcano: 30 km/hr, travels up to 600 km, typically 1 or 2 km away. Volcano is wide and not very tall because of low viscosity: andesite and rhyolite. Travel less far from volcano (more viscous) Andesite: taller and isn"t as wide, lava flow is blobby down side, it cools to quickly before it hits ground so it just kind of piles up on side. Rhyolite: really tall (has the steepest sides, no flow, just a dome in the center, its so viscous it doesn"t even flow out of volcano itself, pyroclastic debris, explodes out of volcano, think of champagne bottle. Dissolved because contents are under high pressure.
