GEOG 2051 : Geog 2051 Test 2
Document Summary
Water gets lifted by the wind: horizontal movements (one place to another) Surface runoff of water, channel wide flow in rivers and streams, the movement of ocean currents: advection. Horizontal movement of water vapor in atmosphere: storage, reservoirs: places where water is restored, oceans, atmosphere, rivers, lakes, soil, glacial ice, living organisms, key characteristic: residence time. The average amount of time water spends in a given reservoir. Atmosphere: tends to be a few days. Rivers: tend to be a few weeks. Ocean gives up more water than it gets through precipitation. Open at the surface to allow precipitation to penetrate: confined aquifer. Partly covered by an aquiclude which prevents water from penetrating through the surface. Some of the infiltrated water will be stored in soil (uppermost layer of material) and eventually gets drawn up by plant roots and used for transportation or may evaporate into air: through flow (slower path)
