Process of managing messages for the purpose of creating meaning. Communication is not just a one shot event, it is constantly negotiated, we are always communicating. We consider a number of factors when producing/receiving messages: Those who are competent communicators can best manage their communication. 60 to 75% of meaning comes from nonverbal communication. Meaning can change due to intended and perceived outcomes. Definitions are functional, not right or wrong, more or less useful for a particular purpose. The competing and contradictory components of group work. Individual goals vs. group goals: personal goals are compatible with group goals. Conflict vs. cohesion: cohesive groups are committed, unified, and willing to engage in conflict. Conforming vs. nonconformity: members value group norms, but are willing to change. Task dimensions vs. social dimensions: members want to get the job done and also value their social relationships. Homogenous vs. heterogeneous: members value member similarities and differences.
