Informal, with formal as needed: leader-member exchange theory: explains process of relationship development between superiors and subordinates. Furthermore explains qualitative differences in each relationship: in-group receive support from supervisors, have influence on decisions made, and greater responsibility. Role expectations can result in colleagues being required to assess one another"s work or performance and can lead to tension.
