Always had fire for those who needed it. The father is seen the only real parent. But if the mother/female doesn"t feed and nourish the child, it dies. Therefore, the earth, which provides food to people, is female. As she was gathering flowers one day hades kidnapped her. He burst out from the ground in his chariot and swept persephone up and retreated back into the underworld. Demeter looked for persephone, but couldn"t find her anywhere. The sun in the sky (who sees everything) told demeter that hades took persephone. Gods could not mingle in other gods" affairs (only zeus can), and once demeter realized she couldn"t get her daughter back, she disguised herself has an old woman and asked to be the nanny of a child. Every night she held the baby over the fire to make it immortal. One night the child"s mother walked in on her and was horrified.
