Document Summary

Two main areas: nigrostatial dopamine system: involved in motor control. Damaged in patients with parkinson"s disease: mesolimbic dopamine system: involved in emotional reward. Overly active during drug addiction: does a whole lot, nigrostatial dopamine system, neurons from the substantia nigra of the brain send dopaminergic neurons in the corpus striatum. Initial reception of auditory sensation: parietal, receive and process sensory input, frontal, responsible for 3 main functions, voluntary motor activity, speaking ability, elaboration of thought, primary motor cortex. Pain: located in frontal lobe, confers voluntary control over movement produced by skeletal muscles, primarily controls muscles on the opposite side of, the pain matrix consists of 9 different subnuclei in all different areas of the brain. Chronic pain conditions such as fibromyalgia and neuropathy are thought to be due to overactivity of neurons in these areas of the brain: pain is a conscious phenomenon. Gaba, as well as neuromodulators such as substance p are the physical manifestation of pain.
