When you hear the word “persuasion”….
Do you have a positive or negative impression?
-term persuasion is interesting
-has both + and
(neg. )- do something you don’t want to think or do
telemarketers
(pos.)- persuaders perspective, learning/ listening to another persons outlook
-hold onto both sides of persuasion to get a sense of what its really about
ex. classic used car salesman, but its also a necessary part
exercising persuasion all the time
live in a democratic society
supposed to persuade and listen to other side
Romance
What is it without persuasion?
What makes it exciting?
Love that is perused, not chosen for us
American culture; you have chosen to love someone, not arranged
Few things about persuasion:
1) it involves choice
2) it occurs everyday life- romance
3) it involves trust and accountability
risking, losing, something for someone else and go with them
persuader is accountable for another person (without abusing that trust)
4) its NOT coercive
its getting the person to decide fro themselves

-when you coerce someone, you are denying the people their ability to use their minds and
imaginations
-there is agency, choice in persuasion without coercion
-coercion/persuasion- blurry line but there is a line
5 good reasons can feel like the fist
1-if you want to be an effective persuader, knowing the tactics is not enough
2- you need to know your audience
understand sociology, history, etc.
3- whatever persuasion, there are broad ramifications
4-be thinking persuaders
what the impact is on the audience, sleep with clear conscience
5- we are NOT above persuasion

(psychoanalytic theory)-instead of training, we all have conscience that symbols mean
something to us-subliminal messages
-rational citizen: “limited effects”
learning model (information-processing modes)
actually not these robots, but that we think and we take factors into consideration
(learning model)- need a lot of things to go right in order for persuasion to work
both theories are mechanical and influence is much more complicated
