Document Summary

Non-living: less organized, lower energy, reactions occur very slow. Living: highly organized, high energy, reactions occur fast. Organic catalysts (enzymes) - almost every reaction has an enzyme. Speed up the rate of a reaction, but are not used up during the reaction. Lower the activation energy to make the reaction go faster. This alters the shape of the enzyme not a huge shape change. If its polar it isn"t going to pass through the membrane. Individual molecules move randomly, but the net effect is non-random. Because there are "less people in the elevator" The side with greater entropy has lower free energy. The side with less molecules, bc the molecules want to be move down free energy. Because the molecules are going to move from where there have greater free energy to where they have lower free energy. Energy must be given away because it cannot be created nor destroyed.
