Document Summary

Characteristics of signaling systems: signal amplification, allows. The two types of muscle calls have different signal-transduction pathways for epinephrine and thus have different cellular responses. Cell signaling in plants: types of plant hormones (video, key features, broad effects controlling major physiological processes, most occur in antagonistic pairs. Auxin and cytokinin in apical dominance: auxins are primarily produced by the meristem and transported down the plant, cytokinins are primarily produced by the root and transported up the stem. Plant rhythms: some plant processes (flowering, etc) follow a daily cycle suggesting plants have rhythms. Chemical signaling in animals: two major systems, endocrine, hormones secreted into blood stream, nervous, neurotransmitters secreted into synapse (junction) between neurons, differences, endocrine system. Broadcasts the signal throughout a broad area via blood stream: nervous system. Sends the signal directly to a target cell via neurons: similarities, many hormones are transmitters, some neurons secrete hormones, both systems involve cells communicating with other cells.
