Document Summary

Understand the difference between anabolic and catabolic pathways: anabolic: building molecules, catabolic: breaking down molecules. Understand how atp hydrolysis provides energy for endergonic reactions: atp + h2o = adp + p (inorganic phosphate, this reaction is extremely exergonic. This energy has to go somewhere, so it is used to power reactions that require energy. Understand how enzymes catalyze chemical reactions: enzymes lower the activation energy, they do not affect the free energy of the reactants or the products. Understand what happens during redox reactions: oxidation/reduction reaction; involves the transfer of electrons from one atom to another; the atom that loses the electron becomes oxidized, while the atom that receives the electron becomes reduced. Called reduction because electrons are negative, and the total positive charge of an atom that receives an electron gets reduced. Na e- + cl >>> na+ + cl e: sodium is oxidized and is the reducing agent; chloride is reduced and is the oxidizing agent.
