Document Summary

Every living organism has at least one cell. Phospholipid bilayer with a mosaic of associated proteins. The top half of the bilayer is called the extracellular layer. The bottom half of the bilayer is called the cytoplasmic layer. Structure: it keeps the cell from leaking out, holds it together. Function: plays an active role in cell process. Individual molecules move randomly, but the net effect is non-random. Molecules move from areas of high concentration to areas of low concentration, however, concentration is not a force. The force that causes the movement is the free energy difference which is caused by a difference in entropy. A section with greater entropy will have less free energy than a section with less entropy (find this using g=h-ts, which, because we can assume there is no difference in heat energy or temperature, simplifies to g=-s). Because of this, the molecules will move to compensate for the energy difference.
