Understand the key features of arthropods, including what an exoskeleton is and the process of molting. Arthropods have appendages and an exoskeleton (external skeleton) The exoskeleton: protects against predators, provides for a range of movement of the appendages, provides a watertight covering, the exoskeleton must be molted (shed) periodically so that the animal can grow in size. It has rasping teeth on its tongue, which are used to excavate a hole in the hosts body wall through which the lamprey sucks blood and body fluids: cartilaginous fishes, these are marine predators. But these proteins are easily broken down in the stomach: venom is only dangerous if it gets directly into the bloodstream.
