Relatively permanent unequal distribution of goods and services in a society. Mechanism depends on-the organization of production, cultural values. The access that different individuals and groups have to the means for achieving social goals. Power: the ability to impose one"s will on others. Wealth: the accumulation of material resources or access to the means of producing these resources. Bases of prestige vary across cultures sources may be race, ethnicity, income, accumulated wealth, or personal characteristics. Wealth not always a source of prestige i. e. illegal gains. Achieved status : a social position that a person chooses or achieves on his own. Ascribed status: status based on characteristics from birth- race, ethnicity, family of origin (royalty), or sex. Class: category of people who all have about the same opportunity to obtain economic resources, power, and prestige and who are ranked relative to other categories. Income is the most important for social class.
