Document Summary

Is due to natural selection acting on genetic variation caused by mutation. Polymorphism interaction between mutation and natural selection. Situation where there exists two or more alleles for a gene, and at least two alleles have frequency greater than 1%. Genotypic variability in our species is much larger than our species will ever be. Balanced poly- situation where there exists greater than 2 alleles for a gene, and at least two alleles have frequency >1%. Due to heterozygotes having higher fitness than homozygotes. Hemoglobin consists of 2 alpha and beta polypeptide chains. Each alpha chain has 141 amino acids; each beta chain has 146 amino acids. Sickle cell hemoglobin due to one point mutation (ie change in one nucleotide) affecting one amino acid in beta chain. Sickle cell allele is polymorphic in some geographical areas, 5-15% frequency in these areas. Malaria caused by parasite transmitted between individuals by mosquito.
