Document Summary

Sensory input: receptor monitor stimuli inside & outside body. Motor output: responds, muscle contraction, glandular secretion w. Central nervous system (cns) : brain and spinal cord. Peripheral nervous system (pns) : nerves and ganglion: collection of neuron cell bodies w. Sensory (afferent) signals picked up my sensory receptors: information coming in. Carried by nerve fibers of pns to the cns. Motor (efferent) signals are carried away from the cns: information going out. Somatic body region: external to ventral body cavity (skin, skeletal musculature, bones) Visceral body region: within the ventral body cavity (digestive tube, lungs, heart, bladder) w. Viscera: the internal organs in the main cavities of the body. Visceral motor( = autonomic nervous system, contraction of smooth. Nervous tissue: made of dendrites, cell body of neuron, nuclei of glial cells, axon. Glial cells: surround neurons and provide support and insulation between them. More abundant than neurons (half volume of ns) Astrocytes: control what goes in and out of the nervous tissue.
