The process of organ donation begins with the consent of the individual when they register in their state. This registration process usually takes place many years before the donation process becomes possible. Registering is the first step in being able to save others lives. Although, signing up does not necessarily mean that you are guaranteed to end up donating your organs. I did not realize before beginning this section that for someone to become a donor they must die in specific circumstances. The commonality is an individual arrives at the hospital due to an serious illness or accident. Once the patient is deceased, the hospital is able to notify the local organ procurement organization. This is to be sure the hospital is keeping up with federal regulations. The organ donor is put on an mechanical type of support so their organs are continuing to receive blood and oxygen.
