Process of knowing and how we gain knowledge. Emphasizes & studies the qualitative changes in the way children and adolescents think. Individuals develop cognitively through 4 stages; each stage involves the mastering of a cognitive task. Changes in cognitive development proceed in distinct stages. His approach is known as the cognitive-developmental approach because cognitive changes take place at different ages. The driving force behind development from one stage to the next is maturation you can"t teach something to an 8 year old that only a 13 year old would understand. Emphasized mental operations: one"s ability to manipulate objects mentally & reason about them in a way that accurately represents how the world works. Schemas mental structure that people use for dealing with what happens in the environment. Child begins to represent the world with words, images, pictures. Egocentrism & animism the inability to understand that others are not thinking the same way they do & inanimate objects having feelings.
