Allport tried to identify central traits that could describe individuals central traits differ for each person: prominent, general dispositions personalities, basic building blocks of personality, 5-10 central traits per person. Cattell identified 16 source traits that ach person had more or less of: everyone has 16 personalities either a lot of one or a little of one different scaling of each 16 traits. Eysenck though most personalities could be described in terms of just 2 dimensions- introversion/extraversion and stability- instability. Costa & mccrae big 5 (ocean) five factor theory. Suggests there are 5 major dimensions of personality: openness to new experiences, conscientiousness, extraversion, agreeableness, neuroticism (emotional stability) Freud : tried to explain why people were the way they were- how they got the personality that they have. Tried to explain why people had personalities they have: personality: stems from resolving the conflict between pleasure seeking and social restraints. Id, ego & superego: id primative pleasure principle.
