Document Summary

Long-term memory: declarative (explicit) memory - memory that can be retrieved and reflected upon consciously. Semantic memories are not specific to you. Episodic memory - autobiographical type memory, specific to your own experiences, not shared with others. The last movie you saw versus the definition of a movie. The information they test on an exam is an example of episodic memory. Because this is information that is specific to you, not many people know that information: metamemory - awareness of our own memory. We are really good at naturally getting the gist of things, we tend to lose the details. Details tend to require active memory strategies. Can be done, but requires awareness of our metamemory: mnemonics - active memory strategies. You tag familiar people to familiar places. You could lose details, so you tie it with something you know you won"t lose. The more unusual they are, the more effective they are.
