During gamete formation, the alleles for each gene segregate from each other so that each gamete carries only one allele for each gene. Genes for different traits can segregate independently during the formation of gametes. Some alleles are dominant while others are recessive; an organism with at least one dominant allele will display the effect of the dominant allele: you should be able to work out monohybrid, dihybrid, and sex-linkage punnett square problems. These will be of comparable difficulty to your homework problems: you should know the mode of inheritance (e. g. autosomal recessive, autosomal dominant, sex-linked recessive) for the different human genetic diseases discussed in class. You should also be familiar with the general phenotypic characteristics that are typical of persons with the diseases. Abnormal/dysfunctional enzymes: pku- caused by a lack of phenylalanine hydroxylase enzyme which catalyzes phenylalanine into tyrosine in the liver. leads to mental retardation.
