Chapter 8 learning objectives: define what a group is and provide examples. Group two or more people who, for longer than a few moments, interact with and influence one another and perceive one another as us . E. g. , a pair of jogging companions, football fans watching a game together: describe social facilitation and explain some of the possible explanations for this phenomenon. Social facilitation (a) original meaning: the tendency of people to perform simple or well-learned tasks better when others are present, (b) current meaning: the strengthening of dominant (prevalent, likely) responses in the presence of others. Social arousal facilitates dominant responses therefore, performance on easy tasks is boosted and performance on difficult tasks declines: explain social loafing and describe some of the factors that reduce this phenomenon. Social loafing the tendency for people to exert less effort when they pool their efforts toward a common goal than when they are individually accountable.
