Compare and contrast what it is like to grow older in rural areas or small towns with what it is
like to grow old in urban areas.
Whether one grows old in a rural area or small town makes a difference in how they age, as
does growing older in an urban area. While there are pros and cons to both types of
environments, it really depends on personal choice where one would prefer to live. Their
decision is often influenced by a multitude of factors including but not limited to their health
status, financial ability, geographic location, activity interests, finances and families.
As we have discussed in class, the majority of people strongly prefer to remain in their
own homes, but this is not always possible. The physical and social environment an adult is in
can make a huge difference in one’s well-being. While rural and urban environments have
unique characteristic, what really matters is that an environment fits with one’s physical,
cognitive and emotional needs (as well as allowing them to maintain some control over their
surroundings). Life-space, the distance one travels to preform activities over a specific time, can
give context to one’s well-being, as those with larger life spaces often have better physical and
psychological well-being. On the other hand, those whose life-space shrinks over time often
have a decline in their functional abilities.
