Document Summary

Circle of willis- an anastomosis of blood vessels that surrounds the hypophyseal fossa of the sphenoid bone, which houses the pituitary gland. Basilar artery- supplies blood to posterior portion of the cerebrum. Formed when two vertebral arteries merge at the base of the skull. After it travels along the pons, it forms two posterior cerebral arteries. The two anterior cerebral arteries are connected by the anterior communicating artery. Blood brain barrier- a selective barrier that protects brain cells from harmful substances and pathogens in the blood. Lipophilic (lipid-soluble/hydrophobic) substances and glucose (via active transport) are allowed to pass through the barrier. Cerebral spinal fluid is synthesized in the choroid plexuses within all the ventricles. Csf is produced by the choroid plexus in the ventricles. Csf flows from the lateral ventricles, through the interventricular foramen into the third ventricle, and then through the cerebral aqueduct into the fourth ventricle.
