Topics to Review:
The Logic of Criminal Justice Research
Someone makes a claim. Can you trust it
§ Skepticism- Attitude of doubting & challenging assertions
§ Validity of science & Replication- How we check the validity of scientific claims. /- Proper
research methods create good science & allow for replication & scrutiny
§ Research as an Ethical Duty- How do I know a researcher was ethical?
Logic of CJ Research
§ The Philosophy of how we know? (Empirical Methods, Positivism, Paradigms)- Empirical
Methods: pursuing facts & reality through experience & observations
There are two philosophical viewpoints
- 1. Positivism: obtaining knowledge based on assumption of an objective reality that
can be discovered with observed data
- 2. Phenomenology: Truth & Reality are determined from your own point of view
The meanings that things have for you are shaped & reshaped through your interaction with others
»SYMBOLIC INTERACTIONISM
- Paradigms: set of shared assumptions & tools that shape our observations of reality
§ Testing Theories (Induction, Deduction, Hypothesis Testing, Feedback)
- Induction (theory information) Tentative or Preliminary explanations of causal relationships
•Not Facts• Indicate what theorists / researchers think• Need to be tested to be supported or refuted
- Deduction (hypothesis creation from theory) Prediction of causal association between two or
more constructs / variables, including direction of causation
- Hypothesis testing: ex Research Questions:
1.Does the use of illicit drugs influence academic performance?
2.Does the rising use of portable electronic devices have an impact on police-community relations?
Ex Hypotheses:
1.Individuals who use illicit drugs at a higher frequency will perform poorer in school.
