Lecture 1 the need for ecological restoration. The destruction of ecosystems, habitat destruction, extinction of wildlife and pollution. When natural habitats are destroyed or natural resources depleted, the environment is degraded: wilderness: last untamed land found on earth (very little left). It remains undeveloped by man and serves as a refuge for wildlife: urban/agricultural: cities and farms, managed natural: such as protected areas, nature reserves and federal parks. A coalition of 10 african nations has pledged to restore 100 million hectares of degraded lands by 2030: currently . 5 billion has been pledged by world bank and private backers to fund the project. Initiative 20x20: launched at conference of the parties 20 (cop 20) in 2014 and updated at paris 2015. Commitments to restore 150 million hectares by 2020: projects are estimated to generate billion per year in net benefits to society, new york declaration on forests: announced at 2015 paris climate talks.
