Document Summary

Study guide #4 (franzoi - 6th ed): fourth exam monday december 14 at 2pm. Attitudes (read only: 166-181: know the classical conditioning experiments: nationality names; subliminal conditioning. Nationality names: asked participants to remember words paired with nationality names (french-with). For one group the target dutch was paired with a positive word and. Swedish with a negative word, for other other group it was reversed. When done they were asked to rate how they feel about the actual nationalities. Results: positive word=more positive rating, negative=more negative rating. This suggests that classical conditioning could play a role in establishing some of the emotional components of attitudes and prejudice. Subliminal conditioning: college students shown photos of strangers doing daily activities preceded by brief subliminal presentations of photos known to produce either positive or negative emotions. These were not consciously perceived however they did have an effect.
