Totem --- collective symbols of objects that are both god and society expresses + symbolizes 2 different kinds of things. The outward and visible form of what is the totemic principle or god. Symbol of a particular society called a clan. Totemic animal --- a totem in the shape or form of an animal that a clan or society uses to identify god with. Observation that god and society are one and the same . Means that since the totem is a distinct mark of the society and of god, therefore god and society are the same.
