The importance of asking the question why is common knowledge, we are taught to look past the surface and understand underlying reasons. In some cases, unfortunately, the stakes are too high and people often ignore the reasons and look to fix what is broken on the surface. Liz flahive"s from up here, for instance, protagonist kenny is asked to deliver a public apology to his high school for an attempted shooting. Throughout the play, the audience sees the backstory which caused the incident, through complex characters such as his dysfunctional family, cruel classmates and apathetic school authority. Despite his victimization, the moment he made the decision to introduce a weapon into school grounds, his reasons no longer mattered. He is defined as a violent perpetrator who needs to take the respective consequences: apologize. However, merely finding a resolution to symptoms would not lead to a solution. Instead, it is important to reconcile with the reason behind the action.
