Our visual system has evolved in a way that allows us to perceive the three dimensions of the real world. Depth perception is accomplished by using various proprieties of the retinal image as reliable cues to depth. Any given scene typically contains many cues in order to produce an unambiguous experience of depth. When you look at an objet that is anywhere from right in front of your eyes to about 2 meters away, you can feel your eyes adjust to focus on it.
