Family Violence Exam #4
A. Intergenerational Transmission of Violence:
a. Definition: comparing rates of violence from different generations
b. key findings
i. men with violent parents: 1/7 or 13% were violent in their
partner// 3x more likely to hit own wives
ii. women with violent parents:1/8 or 12.5% were violent to
their partner// 3x as likely to hit own husbands
iii. severe violence findings: men raised in violent homes are
1000% more likely to abuse their wives & women raised in
violent homes are 600% more likely to abuse their
partner//father and mothers’ violence have an impact on sons
and daughters despite gender
iv. child abuse intergenerational findings: child abuse changed
little from one generation to the other//parents are 25% likely
to severely punish children if they were abused as a child
compared to % is they weren’t abused
v. gender impact of parents: same sex parent punishment is
more influential// no affect is grandparent hits daughter/son
but there is an effect if the grandparent hits the same sex
grandchild ( makes it more likely for them to abuse their
grandchild)
c. lessons taught by violent families: violence begets violence
(love=hit)//those who love you most, hit you most//hitting is morally
right//violence is okay when nothing else works
d. Types of fights
i. Bad fights: crude and hurting (attack money, say worst things
ever, past brought up)
ii. Not fighting: anything you want, speech is silver and silence is
golden, can’t stand hassling, you should know how I feel, silent
treatment, fighting is not ladylike/gentlemanly, be nice, I can’t
take you seriously when you’re angry
iii. Best fights: not in front of kids or friends, not before during or
after sex, keep arguments fair, be balanced, talk I not you
1. Should accomplish: spontaneous statements of feelings
and can change a relationship for the better
B. Animal Abuse:
a. animal abuse as a warning: when animals are abused or neglected it
is a warning sign of an unsafe household//there is a correlation
between animal abuse & child abuse, domestic violence, elder abuse
and other personal violence
b. why important
i. other criminal behavior: 70% of people charged with animal
cruelty were known for other violent behavior
