Freedom comes from the civil society, not from the state/ it is collective and means controlling powers that otherwise control us (we look for freedom in the wrong place) State as symptom of unfreedom because it negates who we actually are. Religion as unfreedom because understand god as power/ knowledge, thus own lack of power/ inability. Purpose: discover why certain problems and why solutions do not go to the root; examine what people yearn for, want to open up dogmatism. Consider state that grants freedom to all versus inequality in civil society. Material life (human existence, organization) shapes history/ world and make change. Consciousness and values (idealism) come from material conditions/ ways of producing our existence (transform material order to correct subjugation) Vs hegel"s dialectical idealism (i: ideas, values, laws, states, doctrines)
