Ethics became more prominent, though they do not dominate, in the field of ir after wwii, especially with wilson"s league of nation, the nuremberg trials, and carter and reagan"s ethical agendas. Today, individual rights figure at the core of the us ethical agenda. However, there are many inconsistencies and contradictions with applying morality when balancing it with security considerations, such as in counterterrorism efforts post 911. Wilson & league of nations; post wwii think of people as individuals and not collateral damage. Realists hold a range of beliefs, but most advocate the primacy of self interest over morality and emphasize necessity. Machiavelli is extreme in his realism, arguing that there is no place for morality in international relations. Morality not only leads to failure, but more bad wars and bloodshed. The prince, however, should maintain moral beliefs in citizens using deception and hypocrisy.
