Document Summary

Arteries: carry blood away from the heart, closer to the heart, elastic, muscular, structure- larger tunica intima. Muscular artery: smaller unnamed arteries, 25-40 layers of smooth muscle, include small and medium arteries. Arterioles: smallest arteries, transport blood from small arteries to capillaries/connect capillaries and small arteries. Veins: carry blood back to the heart, less elastic, less muscular, larger tunica adventitia. Venules: 50 micrometer in diameter, basement membrane and a few smooth muscle cells, as they get bigger they turn into small veins, then to medium and large veins. Structure of arteries and veins: tunica adventitia- most external, thick in veins, tunica media- middle layer, regulate blood vessels diameter (vasoconstriction and vasodilation-relax, send more blood), tunica intima-most inside. Capillaries: site of exchange with tissues (carbon dioxide and oxygen), connecting network, 7-9 micrometer is diameter, capillary diffusion, plasma membrane- liquid-soluble and small water soluble, fenestrae or gaps-larger water soluble muscles.
