Orchestra (symphony orchestra): a large classical orchestra, including string, wind, brass, and percussion instruments. Beat: a regularly recurring sound that divides the passing of time into equal units. Quarter note (and other rhythmic values): 1 quarter note = 1 beat. Time signature: top number tells how many beats in a measure, bottom number tells what kind of note is counted as one beat. Pickup: an upbeat at the very beginning of a piece; gives an extra push into the first down beat. Syncopation: places the accent on a weak beat or between beats; offbeat. Tempo: the speed at which the beat sounds. Melody: the tune; memorable series of pitches, the part we sing along with. Pitch: the relative position, high or low, or a musical sound.
