Modernization theory is the mainstream school of scholarship about poverty and economic, social, and political development in the countries of the third world. Emphasize the disputes among them and to dismiss the dependency school and the marxists as irrelevant or excessively doctrinal or political. Daily work is carried out not to secure a pro t but to perform one"s duty, to maintain one"s place in the society - nothing is innovative, and there is no attempt to better one"s lot. No distinction exists between daily life and spiritual life; it is all one - almost any religious system can serve as the basis for a traditional society. The picture of traditional life painted by the modernizationists is not a negative one. From an economic point of view, however, it is a poor, subsistence life, a life that has no hope of accumulation, income, or wealth - no sense of progress inheres in it.
