Substantive inequality exists within the social order and is the opposite of formal equality. It is more accurate to say that they are different sides of a coin. Formal equality says that all must be equal and receive the same rights and benefits, regardless of their background and/or circumstances. Jim crow laws refer to day-to-day segregation of whites and blacks. It disenfranchised blacks and guaranteed that all resources for blacks were typically inferior to those provided to whites. These laws applied to virtually all aspects of life, such as public transportation, theatres, schooling, restaurants, etc. It would put forth the beliefs that whites were superior than blacks in every way, from intelligence to morality. It promoted racism and sexual relations between blacks and whites would create a race that would destroy america. Brown v. the board of education was a name given to five separate cases heard by the us.
