Equity theory balance is sought btwn what each contributes to the relationship. Cohabitation effect: ppl living together before marriage more likely to divorce. Couples who would not have gotten married slide into it. The fact that they were already living together becomes basis for marriage even if they aren"t a good fit. Ppl who cohabited only with spouse didn"t show the effect, only serial cohabiters. Most investigations of cohabitation involve younger adults but common law unions is being more common in older adults too. Cohabitation with older adults more successful than younger. Ppl who cohabit are less traditional in the way they see marriage and divorce than ppl who marry before living together.
