Document Summary

Before the modern definition of psychology was created there were 2 main schools of psychology: Structuralism the study of the structure and function of the human mind. Functionalism the study of the function of mental and behavioural processes and how they allow us to survive and flourish. Within the 2 major schools there were 4 types of psychological studies: Behaviourism the study of behaviour in response to sensations, feeling, thoughts etc. Freudian psychology - the study of how our unconscious thoughts, emotions, and behaviours derive from our childhood experiences. Cognitive psychology - the study of how we perceive, process, and remember information. Humanistic psychology- how the environments influences can nurture or limit our growth potential, and the importance of having needs of love and acceptance satisfied. Modern definition of psychology- the science of behaviour and mental processes. Biopsychosocial approach an integrated approach that takes all three levels of analysis (biological, psychological, and social-cultural) into account.
