Document Summary

1010b - lecture notes - january 28th 2016. Hull"s drive-reduction theory (see tuesday"s notes): we always motivated to attain a 0 level of arousal. However, theory concentrates on biological needs but overlooks incentives (when there is an anticipation of a reward). When arousal level is too low or too high, we are motivated to attain an optimal level of arousal. So if arousal is very high you"re motivated to reduce it (meditation, calming drugs, relaxing, even exercise can bring arousal down). If arousal is too low, motivated to increase arousal (exercise, coffee, do something stimulating and exciting). Heavy drinkers also tend to be smokers- interestingly, alcohol is a depressant and nicotine is a stimulant. So this ts well with hebb"s theory - that heavy drinkers would need cigarettes to reach optimal arousal levels (to counteract the low arousal from drinking with the high arousal of smoking). *draws a bell curve - to show level of arousal"s relationship with performance.
