The most common rocks: sedimentary and igneous rocks. The principles were not assumptions; each of them were testable hypotheses. Distribution of fossils within history was not random they occurred in a consistent order. Principle of faunal (and floral) succession: the observation that fossils occur in a consistent succession. Biostratigraphy: the study of the succession of fossils and its application to relative dating. Each period of time in the stratigraphy can be identified by an assemblage of fossil organisms called zone. Zones used to establish larger intervals of stratigraphy called geologic stages or systems. Geologic ages or periods: time corresponding to the intervals of rock. Fossil succession and the geologic time scale are constrained by the observed order of stratigraphy.
