Cv system primary goal: deliver o2-rich blood to the tissues of the body & eliminate waste products of cellular metabolism. Resistance = measure of the extent to which a blood vessel hinders or resists blood flow. Blood vessel radius is the most important physiological regulator of resistance, and thus, blood flow. Pressure in the arteries varies during the cardiac cycle. Systolic pressure: highest bp; immediately after ventricles contract. Diastolic pressure: lowest bp, prior to pumping of blood into the arteries: direct measurement : catheter into an artery & pressure gauge (invasive and impractical, indirect method : sphygmomanometer, stethoscope, and bp cuff. Cuff is inflated and stops the arterial blood flow to the arm (brachial artery) creating a high pressure that causes the artery to collapse. Pressure is released and when the systolic pressure > cuff = blood flows to the arm. Turbulent flow can be heard through stethoscope as sharp, tapping sounds (korotkoff sounds) .
