September 24 : intersections of gender, race, class, sexuality and ability. Reading: the intersections of race, class and gender in the anti-racism discourse pg. Racial dominance is an integral part of social inequity and that there is the salience of the white body/racial identity in a white supremacy society. Lived experience is a starting point in understanding oppressions. Disability is a way to neutralize some humans as not quite human. The identification of others is also the moment of self-identificaiton. Identities are not static, we are forever negotiating who and what they are. Social identities are negotiated past the notions of race, gender, class etc. One can be the oppressor and the oppressed at the same time or at different times. We cannot classify people into conceptualized boxes of how they fit in with race, gender and class, it all overlaps and shifts within daily life and over time. Gender is experienced differently along each racial framework and class group.
